Ngee Ann City open in September 1993 as a major shopping centre and office complex in the heart of Orchard Road. With about a couple hundred shops spread over a 1.2 million square feet area across seven floors, it is indeed a self-contained mini-city.

This mega-mall has the Japanese department store, Takashimaya, as its anchor tenant. Other tenants include many brand name clothing and fashion labels as well as a host of restaurants ranging from the Indonesian restaurant Sanur to several themed eateries of the popular Chinese-Hongkong eatery Crystal Jade Group. For a more affordable or faster meal, a popular (and often crowded) food court can be found in basement level B2.

For the literarily-inclined, there are the National Library Board's library@orchard as well as Japanese super bookstore Kinokuniya which carries a wide range of English and Japanese books. Kinokuniya is big enough to even have its own cafe, Coffee Club within its floor space.
